Mississippi Highway 76 (MS 76) is an east-west state highway in Itawamba County, Mississippi. It is a section of Mississippi's portion of Corridor V, part of the Appalachian Development Highway System, connecting with Alabama's SR 24 section at the state line. Though proposed as a 4-lane connection for SR 24 (and all of northeast Alabama) to Fulton, Tupelo, and I-22, it currently only extends from the state line to MS 23. Route description MS 76 currently begins at a T-intersection with MS 23 southeast of Belmont in rural eastern Itawamba County, and heads east a 4-lane divided highway without outside shoulders. Mississippi Highway 9 (MS 9) in the Appalachian Foothills (aka North Central Hills) region of northeastern Mississippi, running north–south from MS 30 east of New Albany to MS 12 in Ackerman. Pontotoc, Mississippi
Pontotoc is a city in, and the county seat of, Pontotoc County, Mississippi, located to the west of the much larger city of Tupelo. The population was 5,625 at the 2010 census. Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word that means, “Land of the Hanging Grapes.” History Pontotoc is a Chickasaw word meaning "Land of Hanging Grapes". The Chickasaw nation occupied this area long before Europeans colonized the Southeast, the last in a succession of indigenous peoples who had this territory for thousands of years. In the early 1830s they were forced to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River through the federal program of Indian removal. Belmont is a town in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,021 at the 2010 census. History The settlement of Belmont was originally called Gum Springs with a post office built in 1884. Mississippi Highway 23 (MS 23) is a state highway in Mississippi. The route starts at MS 25 in the town of Smithville. It travels northeastward through the forests of eastern Itawamba County. The highway intersects Interstate 22 (I-22) and U.S. Route 78 (US 78) in Tremont. MS 23 ends at the Mississippi–Alabama state line, just west of Red Bay. The routing that became part of MS 23 was first constructed as a graded road in 1925, from north of Amory to the state line. Gravel was added to sections of the route in the 1930s. Red Bay is a city in Franklin County, Alabama, Franklin County, Alabama, United States.
